Tobacco
&

Provides tobacco cessation classes, referrals and tobacco education services. Consultation, training and ongoing technical assistance are available to behavioral health and medical staffs who would like to assist their clients/patients with quitting tobacco.

Assistance for smokers is provided through cessation counseling and the use of pharmaceutical aids. As well, tobacco services aim to prevent the onset of smoking among youth through education and engagement in civic activities. Many youth become aware of the tobacco industry's marketing and promotion practices and work in their local communities and schools to counter-act the glamorization and advertising of tobacco products and reduce access to tobacco products. They work with adult allies to develop and implement media campaigns and advocate for public and private policy changes.

Services:

  • Assist agencies and clinics in establishing systems for identifying, treating, and supporting clients and staff who use tobacco.
  • Provide tobacco education and resources for community groups.

The RIDE project seeks to directly counter tobacco usage among youth, young adults and Asian Americans through an intervention employing the enormous popularity of the import scene. Priority issues are (1) secondhand smoke explosure, (2) sponsorship by tobacco industry, (3) cessation, and (4) prevention among youth.

The RIDE project brings together young Asian Americans from throughout the Bay Area and California with a love for cars and racing to protect both
their communities and the automotive scene from the tobacco industry. The RIDE project promotes young Asian Americans as advocates and leaders by transforming their participation in the car scene as a powerful way to make meaningful and proactive changes in their communities.

SUNSET is a program of the San Francisco Department of Public Health's Newcomers Health Program and Bay Area Community Resources.

Project Objectives

  • Initiate a community-wide organizing effort around tobacco issues, including media and other public awareness events
  • Conduct culturally appropriate information sessions on environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and encourage smoke-free homes, vehicles and public places
  • Implement culturally appropriate clinics on quitting smoking
  • Develop culturally appropriate Russian language materials on ETS and quitting smoking

Recent Findings and Accomplishments
82% of Russian-speaking tenants we surveyed supported smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing.
Four multi-unit housing complexes in San Francisco signed smoke-free policies protecting their tenants from secondhand smoke.
Russian-speakers still show a distrust of the government through a wariness to publicize their new policies.
Several public health clinics in San Francisco are piloting a program to ask every patient about their smoking status and assist them in finding resources to quit as a result of SUNSET’s advocacy.
SUNSET has raised the issue of smoke-free buildings as part of the green building process in Daly City.
