Discovering the Reality of Our Community (DROC) is a youth activated, youth focused, alcohol and other drugs prevention program located in El Cerrito, De Anza and Kennedy High Schools. Using the environmental prevention model, we focus on community organizing and social change activities surrounding the issue of drug and alcohol abuse. It is our belief that by helping young people understand their own potential to affect change not just in their lives, but in their communities, we are facilitating the development of self-activated young adults who will make healthy choices about their futures.

Through DROC participants learn how to lead, design and implement community assessments or "community mapping" activities. Based on the findings of these assessments students design a project to address the identified needs of their communities. This past year, for example, one DROC group at El Cerrito High School found (through a survey they created and distributed at El Cerrito High School) that many high school students are accessing alcohol within the home. Therefore, the youth introduced a social host ordinance (noncommercial individuals responsible for underage drinking events on property they own or lease) to the city of El Cerrito. The youth also facilitated a meeting to members of the community in order to gain support for the ordinance. The ordinance is being introduced to the El Cerrito city council this summer.

The Youth Support Program's mission is to provide a nurturing environment where students thrive academically, socially, and behaviorally. The purpose of the program is to produce mentoring and academic support. This is accomplished by matching participants one-on-one with UC Berkeley students. Through safe fun activities students develop cultural sensitivity, improve their leadership skills and self-esteem, and learn civic responsibility.
History

The Youth Support Program (YSP) was established in 1994 as a result of a join effort between the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare, Cal Corps, Willard Middle School, and Bay Area Community Resources. YSP was started by a group of excited U.C. Berkeley students who had a vision to have a greater impact on students in need. The group approached Kirk Hewett, the former Willard school psychologist, to discuss working with Willard students. Together they recognized that the Willard youth would benefit greatly if they could be matched with consistent and dedicated mentors. Starting as a small dream, YSP has evolved into an organization that serves more than 400 participants. The program has moved beyond merely providing support, to promoting cultural and academic enrichment activities.
